Robots and artificial intelligence have fascinated humanity for generations, and Ex Machina explores those curiosities. This production presents androids—represented by the color guard—who gradually reject their original programming over the course of the show. As control gives way to autonomy, the androids experience an awakening that culminates in an epiphany of original thought. Visually, the production is supported by metallic props such as gears, circuit boards, and wires, reinforcing the mechanical world from which the androids emerge.
"Ex Machina" was written by Fred Emory Smith and John Mapes. It was originally commissioned for the fall of 2025 and was released for the 2026 season.
